Find Out Who is Talking About You Online With Our Tools

Social media lets you easily join conversations related to you, your business, your passions and your interests. To ignore social media is to ignore the passionate people of the world who can help you get where you want to be. The first step to tap social media is understanding who is already talking about you online.

To do this, sign up for a Brand-Yourself.com account. After inputting some basic information about yourself, we find and aggregate conversations about you online. We then input them into your personal brand dashboard, which measures the extent of your personal branding efforts.

The Dashboard tracks blog posts that mention you, social bookmarks that mention you, blog comments that mention you, and Tweets that mention you. As new mentions appear, you can confirm them as about your or not about you. Confirmed items about you improve your Hireability Grade,  measuring the strength of your personal brand online.

How to Use Our Blog Recommendation Engine to Tap the Blogosphere

To build your personal brand, you should proactively comment on blogs related to your field and interact with bloggers in your industry.

To help you get started, we developed a Blog Recommendation Engine that suggests what blogs you should be reading based on your field. It taps into a variety of authoritative blog sources including Technorati, AllTop, and user generated and expert-reviewed suggestions.

Leaving thoughtful comments on blogs posts establishes yourself as contributing member of your industry. Besides demonstrating your insight, it also connects you to top bloggers in your field and other blog commenters in your niche who can potentially advance your career. Follow our guidelines for leaving effective blog comments to maximize your time spent commenting.

The Blog Recommendation Engine is one part of our Hireability Dashboard, which breaks down the components of your personal brand online and grades the strength of each. It is part of the Niche Involvement section, which tracks your blog comments, blog comments mentioning you, recommended blogs and Twitter. The Visibility section tracks your Google search results, professional profiles, social networks, directories, web 2.0 services to protect your username on, and media related to your name.  The Credibility section tracks your blog, other blogs mentioning you, social bookmarks mentioning you, and news mentioning you. Each section shows you what you should do to create a strong personal brand online, and tracks your progress along the way:

Build Your Home Base on the Web With Our Site Builder

A strong personal brand online must have a home base. This is a website that at a minimum describes the unique value you provide, states your qualifications, provides your contact information, and links out to the rest of your presence on the web. If you haven’t started your own home base website, it’s easy: start now with our Site Builder.

Ideally, your home base should be at your own URL, such as www.JohnAdams.com. Get this custom URL through us for $11.99/yr and put this URL on every career touch-point: your email signature, your resume, your LinkedIn profile, your business card, etc. Before you choose the URL you want,  read How to Search Engine Optimize Your Name.  This will make your site rank higher in Google searches when people search for you.

How Involved is Your Personal Brand?

To build your personal brand, you should proactively participate in conversations and blogs related to your field. How involved are you?

To answer this, we developed a Hireability Dashboard that breaks down the components of your personal brand online and grades the strength of each. Last week, I talked about our tool that grades the credibility of your personal brand. Today, we’ll talk about niche involvement: are you building powerful networks by engaging with the top bloggers and Twitter users  in your field?

The Niche Involvement portion of the Hireability Dashboard is broken up into tabs: Your Blog Comments, Blog Comments Mentioning you, Recommended Blogs and Twitter.

The first tab, Your Blog Comments, tracks your blog comments. You’ll need to input your BackType username (create an account if you haven’t already) so we can pull all of your blog comments into the Dashboard for you. (You can enter this when you first sign up, or enter it later by clicking My Account in the top right navigation when you’re logged into Brand-Yourself). Your Niche Involvement score increases as you leave more blog comments.

The next tab, Blog Comments Mentioning You, tracks who is talking about you in their comments. Your Niche Involvement score increases as more blog commenters talk about you.

Picture 4

The next tab, Recommended Blogs, keeps track of blogs related to your field that you should be reading. These are also the blogs you should be commenting on to establish relationships with top bloggers and other readers passionate about your niche.

Picture 5

The Twitter tab monitors and analyzes your activity on Twitter: followers, updates, last update, recent tweets, recent mentions, and recent direct messages. Your niche involvement score rises as you Tweet more often and gain more followers.
